Born in 1982 and raised in a small town on the south coast of Fife, his earliest artistic expression was copying cartoon characters of the time which quickly developed into creating his own characters and comics.  In doing very little else but drawing and doodling his skill progressed and soon he could accurately depict whatever he saw in front of him or indeed translate what was in his head onto the paper.  With a degree in Illustration,  a conscious decision was made to further his independent studies into fine art.

Influenced by a diverse mix of pop culture and a passion ranging from fine art to street art, Russell strives to create an unusual, yet appealing, and thought-provoking aesthetic where the skewed realism within the work forces the viewer to critically examine the characters and the themes suggested by the content.  His work, primarily figurative, is highly considered and detailed in its methods.  Using just pencil and paper, he creates strong, time consuming work which often embodies darker undertones and gives an insight into a restless imagination.

Now living and working in Glasgow, Russell has been an exhibiting artist since graduating from Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art in Dundee in 2004.  His career so far consists of three solo shows, numerous group shows across Scotland and various commissions, which includes artwork for musician Rudi Zygadlo’s debut album on Planet Mu Records.  He’s currently working on a major project for Edinburgh zoo and preparing work for two 2011 solo shows’ in Hamburg and Edinburgh.
